Human Remains Detection Dogs® (corpse detection dogs), which are trained in the civilian sector, are primarily used in the context of disaster and disaster relief as well as in the search for missing persons if it can be assumed that the missing person is no longer alive. Use in forensics is not part of the civil search for corpses. A search in the area of suspected or recent crimes may therefore only be carried out upon direct request and order from the executive branch. In general, it should be noted that if a corpse or parts of a corpse are found, the police must be called immediately.
Human Remains Detection Dog® INTERNATIONAL sets international standards for the requirements of a corpse detection dog team in a civilian context. The organization works to set the standards and guidelines for the training and use of dogs in the search for human remains. All member organizations are obligated to apply these standards as minimum standards.
